Chapter Twenty-One

Forcing his mind to focus on this ending well, Archer wrapped his arms around the rug and hoisted it up. It was damn heavy, and he was puffing like he’d swum a mile by the time he lugged it to the ramp. It was too wide to roll down the slope, so Archer laid it longwise and dragged it along.

“I don’t know what this thing is made of.” Archer spoke between ragged breaths. “Concrete or something.”

After dragging it against the nearest wall, he untied the rope holding it together and kicked the roll out.

Jimmy yawned. “Sorry I’m no help.”

“It’s all good, buddy.” Archer helped Jimmy onto it. “Okay. Try to get some sleep.”

Lying with their backs to each other, they turned off their flashlights. The darkness was complete. They truly were in the bowels of the earth.

The silence, too, was absolute. It was like they’d climbed onto another planet.

“Hey, Arch, no matter what happens, I’m glad we found this.”

“Hey, don’t talk like that. We’ve been in worse situations.”

Jimmy didn’t respond.

They had been in several life-threatening situations, even looked death in the eye. But Archer had a terrible feeling this was the worst. If they didn’t find a way out, there was absolutely nothing they could do. Nobody knew where they were, and they had no way to contact anyone.

He curled his arm to use as a pillow and his heart skipped a beat. “Oh, Jesus, Jimmy. We forgot about Nemo.” Archer turned on his headlight and sat. He pressed a button on the console on his wrist, and the LCD screen illuminated. The light reflected off the six alabaster jars, giving them a surreal glow.

He pressed the button to turn on Nemo, but nothing happened. He pressed it again and toggled the switch. Again nothing. “Shit. It’s either too far away or the signal can’t penetrate these walls.”

“Damn it, Arch, I thought you’d figured a way out of here.” The dejection in Jimmy’s voice was as thick as sump oil.

Archer turned to him. They’d been through some shit, and nearly every time, even when Jimmy had been shot and was bleeding out, he’d still managed to put a positive spin on it. Not this time. Jimmy was close to giving up. And that was not good.

“Let’s get some rest.” Archer turned off the console.

He curled onto this side again.

“We will get out of here, Jimmy. I promise.”

He closed his eyes and hoped like hell it was a promise he could keep.
